FAIRFIELD , Connecticut –  You don’t go to an Alejandro Escovedo show expecting to hear sensitive ballads — although he’s as fine a songwriter as anyone out there and does write and play them.

He also plays plenty of blistering roots rock — and has made a career of it — and like Los Lobos, Santana and Los Lonely Boys, it’s at the same time both germane to who he is and totally irrelevant that he happens to be one of the nation’s great Chicano rockers.

In concert, Escovedo, who returns to perform at Fairfield Theatre Company’s StageOne Friday night at 7:45 p.m., is about as blistering as it gets.
